My Passport for Mac ideal for video file backups and transfers. File storage seems to always at a premium these days. Western Digital makes a really nice line of small, portable hard drives and they recently released a new version of the My Passport for Mac. I am trying to imagine how to reconfigure my system and my BACKUP ROUTINE for the long haul. I have a mac pro with a 1 TB primary BOOT OS HD where i have 684 GB utilized and 112 GB available. I just ran a DVD backup of about 120 GB of old mail to 13 DVD's and simply /deleted/ this data off my HD in order to keep working. For BACKUPS i run a Time Machine backup to a 3TB HD on site, one to a 1 TB HD on site and one to a 1TB HD i store off-site. Bay 1: primary boot OS. Bay 2: windows OS bay 3 and 4: 2 - 2 TB RAID Array. I just set up the RAID array with the 2 - 2 TB HD in bays 3 and 4. Originally i had some great idea on MOVING ALL MY DATA to the 2 - 2 TB RAID array and SWITCHING ALL THE BACK UPS to this RAID array. At /some/ point i imagine this will involve my purchasing 2 TB external HD's to replace the current 1 TB ones if/when the data on this RAID array goes over 1 TB. This ALSO MEANS i won't be backing up my primary boot OS regularly. Then i found out that a simpler way may be to MOVE THE HOME FOLDER to the RAID array. Now i am thinking that simply reformatting the 2 - 2 TB HD's to single HD's and moving the primary boot to /one/ of these HD's and backing up daily to the other is the way to go. Can anyone offer advice on how to handle such a thing? Should i MOVE THE HOME FOLDER to the 2 - 2 TB RAID array and keep running the BOOT OS off my bay 1 HD but store my HOME FOLDER on the 2 - 2 TB RAID array? If I did this i assume i would move my BACKUP routine to save the data in the HOME FOLDER on the RAID ARRAY. Should I MOVE THE WHOLE OS to a new setup on ONE of the 2 - 2 TB HD's and possibly use one of these as a daily backup to the other? Should i do B but just keep the RAID ARRAY?! I am going to run WhatSize and try to see where i can save space elsewhere, however, i am not so sure that i will find other data to remove in such a manner as other ARCHIVE information that resides on my HD is going to be information that is absolutely necessary for me to retain and have access to. Thanks for any advice. I am stuck in the mud with this issue. Jon, You can move your home folder to a different drive. It is a task that requires understanding what is happening behind the scenes with how users are linked to their home directory. But it is not hard to do. I wrote a while back that may help. When it comes to a user with fairly large data files, like photo libraries or videos, then it may pay to keep it simpler and just move the photos or whatever to another disk and leave the home directory alone. You gain room and performance this way. And the setup is simpler than moving the entire user directory. Always something to be said for 'simple'. I would not use RAID to increase data security. Always use a second drive and back up to it. How to get spotify app on fire stick. Backup (clone) software like SuperDuper, ChronoSync or others like them are good choices for backup software. Simpler than Time Machine they are also easier to use in the event of a drive failure. Just go to using the backup and replace the failed drive and copy the data back. RAID can give you faster and bigger storage for your data. That is a valid tasking for a couple drives in a RAID. Still need an equivelant size backup. So currently the bay 3 and bay 4 are 'RAID slice for 'HD Name' ' which i guess means they are mirrored? Netflix app for mac min. Description Netflix for Mac is the best and most powerful Netflix desktop client. It’s perfect for quickly accessing your Netflix account without ever needing to open a web browser, allowing you to watch movies, tv shows and more with the greatest of ease. These are just two brand new drives so i can reformat them very easily assuming i have JUST THE OS on the drive in bay #1 as i think you suggest: 1. Are you saying i can move the HOME FOLDER to bay 3 and run a daily backup of this data to bay 4 if i reformat the drives as individual drives? I mean, if i do this i can just keep running my Time Machine backup but backing up the DATA on the drive in bay 3 instead of the drive which just has only the OS on it. Or presumably i could also back up the OS as well on the external drives. Or are you saying that i can move make the 2 TB drive my new drive by creating a PARTITION for the Boot OS and also keep the data on the partition which is the rest of this 2 TB drive?
